No longer designed as mere complementary practices, many of the discursive events that contemporary art institutions produce today will be on an equal footing with their exhibition program. Moving away from the traditional practice of setting up exhibitions emphasizing presentation, these institutions are embracing their identity as sites of research, open archives, and socially engaged spaces for discussion and debate. This approach advances the art institution as a dynamic, permeable production site, in which artists, curators, poets, musicians, scientists, architects, philosophers, and the public – all have the chance to join in and play an active role.

In this module, we will explore ways in which the curatorial is reframing institutional practice, as art professionals assiduously engage with possible formats and mandates.
