This module prompts arts administrators to develop a writer’s sensibility: an awareness of audience, purpose, and contexts of writing; an ability to clearly define the aims of individual genres; and self-awareness of what processes and conditions best support an arts administrator, artist, and/or writer to draft, revise, and complete work for publication.
In our ninety-minute period we will learn more about five kinds of writing about art–criticism or reviews; artists’ statements; press releases; curators’ essays or other introductions (pamphlets; flyers; news stories; social media) to exhibits or museums; and the art of fund-raising. Participants will learn the rhetorical skills necessary to be a successful communicator in the arts. Students will be asked to complete readings and at least one writing assignment before the workshop begins.
