LEAP Student Highlight – Emily Castillo at Wilhelmina Denver

Emily Castillo is a LEAP Minor student pursuing her Bachelors in Fine Arts in Photography. Originally from Illinois, Emily transferred to Colorado State University to complete her degree. Emily is a photographer focusing on commercial photography, landscapes, and underwater scenes, but she understands the importance of practical management skills as she sets her eyes on a career in the creative industries.

In order to gain more hands-on experience, the LEAP Institute for the Arts Minor program requires all students to complete one internship with a business or organization of interest. This allows students the chance to test potential career paths before having to commit to a job. In speaking with Emily, she expressed that she’s interested in combining her love of photography and using the management skills she’s learned in LEAP to work within the talent agency business. She is completing her internship this summer with Wilhelmina Denver – a top acting and talent management company in the region.

As an intern, Emily is conducting photoshoots with new talents as well as established talents that hold contracts with the company. She is also helping manage appointments, emailing contract information to in-house photographers, and getting a better understanding of how the business side of the agency works. She expressed that LEAP class that has helped her the most include the policy classes, which have helped her understand concepts such as copyright and how that will affect her work as she sets out to be a professional photographer.
